New Footage
I took some new images for my website, some of which emulate the 'This Girl Can' campaign, giving me the opportunity to add more intertextuality to my website. I also filmed new footage for my 30-second audio-visual content as I had a new idea to create a doctor's top tips for lockdown, rather than a behind the scenes montage.

Documentary update
After my first draft of the documentary, I filmed with Elsie a second time to add new clips and replace some others. I plan on making my second edit with these clips and then I should be ready to put the fully edited video into after effects so that I can add some captions and graphics to the film.

New logo
After adding some content to my Instagram account I decided that I wanted a simpler and more modern logo that was more on-brand for BBC Three, so I've changed it to the following:
First Day of filming
On my first day of shooting, I met with my presenter, Elsie, and filmed a large proportion of our footage. We travelled to our 'Sports psychologist's' office and filmed an interview as well as capturing a few external shots of the building for cutaways. However, it was very rainy, so I will return to the office for better shots at a later date. We also went to a field to film introductory clips of Elsie.
Throughout the day I filmed two TikToks to document aspects of the day, as I did this I had the idea of filming a day in the life as my 30 second audiovisual. I will use my second day of shooting to do this.
During filming, I encountered some hiccups with lighting and audio but we quickly solved this. I now have a better idea of timings and what will be required for my second day of filming which will be with my presenter and subject.

Tutorial Feedback
After refleting on my documentary plans and ideas so far I now know for certain some changes I need to make and targets I need to reach.
As a documentary I need to ensure I have 5 key factors:
This is a slight change to my initial plan as I am bringing in the negative aspect of professonal sport so that audiences can see a true representation of sport, my presenter will investigate into at what point spot begins to be more of a stresser than for fun I will begin with the scientific positives being explained by Elsie and my sports psychologist, followed by investigations into specific sports. I also need to ensure that I have lots of cutaways to use during interviews such as a dancer getting ready, graphics, etc.
As a documentary I need to ensure I have 5 key factors:
- an expert
- a subject
- footage of the issue
- opinions
- facts
- My expert will be my dad as a sports psychologist
- My subject will be one of my friends (Hollie) who dances as a rofessional dancer
- My footage of the issue will be cutaways often negative aspects of professional sport during my interview
- My presenter (Elsie) will explain that she will interview many sports people to investigate the benefits of sport but also the negative aspects of of doing a sport professionally

Website Audio-Visual: Planning
For my website's audiovisual content I plan to compile behind the scenes footage, consisting of funny moments and bloopers. I plan that most of this footage will come from the shoot of my presenter trying out a sport so I will ensure to get a lot of extra footage here. I will also gather extra footage from when I have my presenter directly addressing the camera as I could use this too.
In using funny moment and bloopers, my behinds the scenes footage will not only uphold the entertainment aspect of the BBC's public service remit but will further support the documentary itself in saying that happiness can be derived from sport.

Documentary research: Scheduling and audience patterns
Recently, documentaries have become increasingly popular, even among the young-adult demographic. Streaming services such as Netflix demonstrate this as the site now has 365 documentaries available to stream and announces 64 million households chose to watch the documentary Tiger King. The BBC also has a huge 3428 texts defined as documentaries immediately available to watch.
This chart shows that documentaries are the second most common type of show to be broadcast at peak times on BBC channels and fourth most common to be broadcast on ITV

NEA Revision of Pitch
- The main thing I am changing about my pitch after my research is the inclusion of online trends in relation to sport such as TikTok dances and other viral sports challenges. I may also create a new challenge of my own to encourage audience participation. This change means that I can more easily include digital convergence and attract my target audience.
- I will also have quite a large focus on entertainment throughout, with more serious sections embedded so that it differs from the darker documentaries that already exist on BBC Three.

NEA: Audience Research Summation
As a result of my audience research, I have discovered that BBC iPlayer and BBC Three are not my audiences preferred way of accessing online videos, this was true of my focus group as well. I, therefore, must ensure that I use tools such as digital convergence in order to draw my audience into my documentary, as well as making the beginning of the documentary itself interesting so that they continue to watch.
Possible ways I could attract my 16-34 demographic:
Possible ways I could attract my 16-34 demographic:
- Use of social media sites such as Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter as digital convergence
- Feature the TikTok dance craze in my documentary so that younger audiences who are less interested in the science are drawn in by the mention of TikTok
- The audio-visual content on my website will be more entertaining rather than scientific in order to balance out the fact-heavy article
- Use graphics and text on top of my video footage in order to more easily explain the science and make it more memorable

NEA Planning: Feedback on pitch
I received these responses from my peers on an online form which they answered after reading my initial pitch
After this feedback, I will definitely feature dance in my documentary as well as more niche sports such as yoga and Zumba. However, as the feedback on this question were quite varied I will aim to include multiple different sports to interest a wider audience |
Everyone who gave me feedback was either likely or somewhat likely to watch a mental health based documentary, I will, therefore, ensure the documentary is anchored by the mental health theme. |

NEA Planning: Pitch
My initial idea for my NEA is for the television and online brief. After looking at BBC Three's documentaries, I have noticed that many of them cover current issues such as mental health and fast fashion, as well as some, being largely for entertainment value to a younger audience. My documentary covers a topical issue whilst being entertaining. Due to this, my idea is to have a documentary exploring how sport can benefit mental health, including factual data and light-hearted, entertaining moments (perhaps with the presenter attempting different sports). I will incorporate both of these in my 3-minute opening sequence by cutting between a presenter giving facts and possibly interviewing people, and people performing various sports. For my website, I will then have behind the scenes clips and links to various exercise clubs and mental health support sites so that the audience can engage. As I dance myself and many of my friends are dancers this is the most accessible sport for me to engage with, I, therefore, plan to have one of the pages on my website dedicated to how dance specifically can aid mental health, with my audio-video perhaps being a dance tutorial or something similar.
How it meets the brief
How the audience will engage with it
How I will use digital convergence
How it meets the brief
- covers a relevant issue whilst being entertaining so is suitable for BBC Three
- a socially conscious, younger audience would be interested in the topics covered so it fits the target demographic
- I will incorporate a variety of social groups by having clips of different people playing different sports
- my 2 web pages will be an introductory home page and a page specifically on how dance improves mental health.
How the audience will engage with it
- the website will include a basic dance tutorial for beginners as part of a 'do it yourself' trend so that the audience can try the sports out for themselves
- my website will also include links to social media accounts and online classes for the sports shown in the documentary
- the website will also have links to charities that help with mental health so that audiences can either donate or seek help
How I will use digital convergence
- in my documentary, I will reference the content available on the website
- the website will include the presenter's social media accounts and quotes and information on those participating in the sports in the documentary
- I will include behind the scenes footage from the documentary on my website

NEA Planning: reflection on moderators report
Useful points from the report:
- Statement of intent:
- Include 'how and why particular effects would be created' - go into detail about planned shot types, mode of address and tone intended.
- 'Go through the brief in depth'- deal with each part of the brief individually and lat out how you will achieve each requirement.
- Make a 'clear link between the two' pieces of work and explain how you will use digital convergence to establish this.
- Take it as an opportunity to explain your thought process and ensure all the unconventional or unexpected aspects are highlighted.
- Television and online (my intended brief):
- 'Real confidence and understanding the of codes and conventions' - I must thoroughly research and watch BBC Three documentaries in order to achieve this.
- 'Wide variety of content delivered in the 3 minutes' - I must also try and vary the content and have multiple shoots in order to create this variation.
- 'The needs of the target audience were met through content and mode of address'- I must also thoroughly research my target audience and how BBC Three works to target a similar audience.
- The report had an emphasis on casting and rehearsing, due to this I will take great care in choosing who I feature in my work.
- Good ways to ensure digital convergence are by having the presenter addressing aspects of the website (will have to be pre-planned) or by using a banner across the bottom.
- 'At the lower end there was usually a lack of awareness of appropriate mise-en-scene, framing and composition; setting was generally the least considered aspect' - because of this I will thoroughly plan appropriate and accessible settings.

Before creating my own Daily Mail front cover I tried to familiarise myself with the typical layout of a cover and their target audience, to do this, I made a collage of a few covers alongside the YouGov reader profile for the mail.
After the research, I then decided that I wanted to make my splash about the royal family to reflect the traditional interests of the average reader. I then decided to make my second article about the Australian bush fires but use an image of a celebrity in order to draw in the reader and stress that a typical reader would most likely be more interested in the celebrity aspect of the story rather than the environmental side. Once this was decided, I read through some previous articles of the mail to get an idea of the house style and, in doing this, noticed that when writing about Markle, often the Mail refer to her very casually as Meghan and only use her title when addressing her as well as Prince Harry. When writing my article I tried to use an editorial viewpoint that was positive about the royal family but negative towards Meghan Markle herself. In order to create this representation of Markle, I used verbs such as 'plot', 'threatening' and reject' but still used the royal titles 'Duke and Duchess of Sussex' as the typical Mail reader likes the tradition of the royal family. In terms of the Bushfires story, I used a close up image of Selena Gomez as I notices that almost all Daily Mail covers had an image of a woman, I also addressed Gomez by her first name Selena to where to the more colloquial, celebrity gossip aspects of the paper. I then created my article and headlines on word before copying them into photoshop:
- Who- duke and duchess
- What- moving
- When- recently- after their holiday
- Where- Canada
- Why – dropping royal duties
- Markle makes her move
- Nation in uproar as Markle plots move to Canada
- It has been revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may fly off and raise their family in Canada after spending an extended holiday there over Christmas. The royal pair broke royal tradition at the end of 2019 after rejecting Her Majesty The Queen’s invite to Sandringham over the festive period and have taken it one step further by threatening to leave the country all together. The Duke and Duchess are also under fire as they ‘step back’ from royal duties following the birth of their first son , Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
- Selena Gomez is among the celebrities donating millions to the Australia Bushfire Foundation
I then began to make my cover on photoshop, ensuring that the main headline and picture took up a lot of space to adhere o tabloid conventions. I also added a weight-loss exclusive as i realised this was a common theme in post-Christmas papers. For my advert I used HSL as not only is it a brand with a similar target audience to the Mail but it also sponsors Tipping Point so this could interest a secondary audience of a similar age to the target.
