NEA Planning: Pitch

My initial idea for my NEA is for the television and online brief. After looking at BBC Three's documentaries, I have noticed that many of them cover current issues such as mental health and fast fashion, as well as some, being largely for entertainment value to a younger audience. My documentary covers a topical issue whilst being entertaining. Due to this, my idea is to have a documentary exploring how sport can benefit mental health, including factual data and light-hearted, entertaining moments (perhaps with the presenter attempting different sports). I will incorporate both of these in my 3-minute opening sequence by cutting between a presenter giving facts and possibly interviewing people, and people performing various sports. For my website, I will then have behind the scenes clips and links to various exercise clubs and mental health support sites so that the audience can engage. As I dance myself and many of my friends are dancers this is the most accessible sport for me to engage with, I, therefore, plan to have one of the pages on my website dedicated to how dance specifically can aid mental health, with my audio-video perhaps being a dance tutorial or something similar.

How it meets the brief

  • covers a relevant issue whilst being entertaining so is suitable for BBC Three
  • a socially conscious, younger audience would be interested in the topics covered so it fits the target demographic
  • I will incorporate a variety of social groups by having clips of different people playing different sports
  • my 2 web pages will be an introductory home page and a page specifically on how dance improves mental health.

How the audience will engage with it

  • the website will include a basic dance tutorial for beginners as part of a 'do it yourself' trend so that the audience can try the sports out for themselves
  • my website will also include links to social media accounts and online classes for the sports shown in the documentary
  • the website will also have links to charities that help with mental health so that audiences can either donate or seek help

How I will use digital convergence

  • in my documentary, I will reference the content available on the website
  • the website will include the presenter's social media accounts and quotes and information on those participating in the sports in the documentary
  • I will include behind the scenes footage from the documentary on my website

NEA Planning: moodboard

NEA Planning: reflection on moderators report

Useful points from the report:

  • Statement of intent:
    • Include 'how and why particular effects would be created' - go into detail about planned shot types, mode of address and tone intended.
    • 'Go through the brief in depth'- deal with each part of the brief individually and lat out how you will achieve each requirement.
    • Make a 'clear link between the two' pieces of work and explain how you will use digital convergence to establish this.
    • Take it as an opportunity to explain your thought process and ensure all the unconventional or unexpected aspects are highlighted.

  • Television and online (my intended brief)
    • 'Real confidence and understanding the of codes and conventions' - I must thoroughly research and watch BBC Three documentaries in order to achieve this.
    • 'Wide variety of content delivered in the 3 minutes' - I must also try and vary the content and have multiple shoots in order to create this variation.
    • 'The needs of the target audience were met through content and mode of address'- I must also thoroughly research my target audience and how BBC Three works to target a similar audience.
    • The report had an emphasis on casting and rehearsing, due to this I will take great care in choosing who I feature in my work.
    • Good ways to ensure digital convergence are by having the presenter addressing aspects of the website (will have to be pre-planned) or by using a banner across the bottom.
    • 'At the lower end there was usually a lack of awareness of appropriate mise-en-scene, framing and composition; setting was generally the least considered aspect' - because of this I will thoroughly plan appropriate and accessible settings.
